Given that the line y/2 = x – p and the line ax + 5 = 3y are parallel, find the value of a.

You have to find the value of a for which parallel lines are given in this question.
This is the Question Number 04, Exercise 12.2 of M.L Aggarwal.

    Line equation: y/2 = x – p

    ⇒ y = 2x – 2p

    Here, the slope of the line is 2.

    And, another line equation: ax + 5 = 3y

    ⇒ 3y = ax + 5

    y = (a/3) x + 5/3

    Hence, the slope of the line is a/3

    As the line are parallel, their slopes must be equal

    ⇒ 2 = a/3

    a = 6

    Thus, the value of a is 6.
