A solid metallic cuboid of dimensions 9 m × 8 m × 2 m is melted and recast into solid cubes of edge 2 m. Find the number of cubes so formed.

Last time this problem was asked in 2017 cbse board exam. Question number 1 in RS Aggarwal book page number 809, exercise 17B, chapter volume and surface area of solid.

  1. Given,

    The volume of solid metallic cuboid is 9 ×8 ×2

    = 144 m³

    This cuboid has been re-casted into solid cubes of edge 2 m whose volume is given by

    2³ = 8 m³

    ∴ The total number of cubes so formed = the volume of solid metallic cuboid / the volume of solid cubes
    = 144 / 8

    = 18

    ∴ 18 cubes are formed
